Errors in Current School Info
Hi folks – I am a current parent, there are two significant errors you should be aware of:
1) Jackson does not have and has never offered Pre-K. This is something we taxpayers have been challenging the APS to address and implement. To date, it has not occurred. E Rivers is the only Buckhead school location with a Pre-K program.
2) Jackson student/teacher ratio is 11:1 ONLY in the Kindergarten classes, and only if a parapro has been assigned to the room. For grades 1-5 the student/teacher ratio is 22:1. This is the state maximum. In the 2008 school year, all classes are full in both the primary center (K and 1st grade, located on Tuxedo Road) and the main campus (2nd-5th grades, Mt. Paran Road).
In addition, there was a massive rezoning in the NW school districts, and many parents who were zoned in either Jackson or Brandon found themselves zoned elsewhere. The actual transition takes place in 2009. The APS has opted to re-open previously closed neighborhood schools in order to accommodate explosive population and re-draw school zones, instead of building new schools more capable of managing the situation. This is very much to the dismay of homeowners, so “grandfathering” was offered to smooth the transition (however, bus service will no longer be provided, and there are strict stipulations as to when you must establish residency, when siblings are born/able to attend, etc.). Please do yourself a favor and review the new zones and all rules governing the 2009 transition before purchasing your home, if school zoning is important to you. There are homes listed in my neighborhood with incomplete information.
Best wishes!
